Making History & Geography Unforgettable

In class and beyond...

Our story began when ...

Our story began when we both started working at the same school. Between juggling lesson planning, marking, and the chaos of full-time mum life, we quickly became work besties.

Somewhere in the middle of the madness, we realised we shared the same passion for history and geography – and the same belief that learning should stick (and even be fun).

HumsMums was born out of that mix: two full-time mums, two full-time teachers, and a lot of ideas. What started as swapping tips in the staffroom has grown into videos, our blog, resources, summer schools, and soon a podcast – all designed to make teaching and learning a little easier, and a lot more memorable.

We love what we do

We love what we do. Teaching history and geography isn’t just our job – it’s our thing. We love bringing the past to life, making sense of the world, and helping students see that these subjects are anything but boring. Whether it’s through a ridiculous costume, a clever resource, or a summer school session that sticks with them, we put our all into making learning something students actually remember. For us, this isn’t just teaching – it’s sharing what we love in a way that works.

Meet Hums Mums Helen

I’ve been teaching secondary geography since 2002, after earning my degree in Human Geography (2:1) and completing my PGCE in secondary geography. Over the years, I’ve taught GCSE, A level, and even degree-level content, always with the aim of making geography exciting and accessible. Growing up in Norway and travelling widely has fuelled my passion for understanding people, places, and the planet – a passion I love sharing with my students. I’m also a mum to two amazing girls who keep me very busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I've been teaching geogrpahy since 2002 - which basically means I've spent two decades explaining that it's not just colouring maps.

Meet Hums Mums Em

I came into teaching after a successful career in fashion and social media, but history has always been my true passion – especially modern history. I’ve always loved finding creative ways to tell stories, so teaching felt like the perfect fit.

I have a degree in Journalism and English Literature and a Master’s in History, which means I get to mix my love of writing, research, and big ideas in the classroom every day. Since 2018, I’ve been teaching and trying to inspire students to see history as more than just dates – it’s the story of us all.

I’m also a mum to two boys, so life is full-on, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Teaching full time while raising two boys means I run on coffee, chaos, and a love of history that refuses to quit.

Our ultimate goal is to make everyone love history and geography as much as we do – or at least leave our lessons knowing they can thrive in them (costumes optional).
