The Middle of the Term Slump (And Why It’s Completely Normal)

There is a very specific point in every term where everything feels… heavier.
It’s not the first week energy.
It’s not quite end-of-term chaos.
It’s the middle.
The lessons are planned.
The novelty has worn off.
The tiredness has settled in quietly.
And suddenly you’re wondering:
“Why does this feel harder than it should?”
Let’s say this clearly.
The middle-of-term slump is normal.
Why It Happens
1. Adrenaline wears off
The start of term comes with momentum. New seating plans. Fresh starts. Clean planners. That carries you for a while.
Then routine takes over.
Routine is stable, but it’s not exciting.
2. Cognitive load builds
Students are carrying weeks of new content.
You are carrying weeks of marking, behaviour management and micro-decisions.
No single thing feels overwhelming.
But everything combined does.
3. There’s no obvious milestone
At the beginning, you’re starting.
At the end, you’re finishing.
In the middle, you’re just… continuing.
And continuing requires resilience.
What To Do About It
Not everything needs a dramatic reset.
Sometimes the answer is smaller.
Adjust, don’t overhaul
You do not need to redesign the entire scheme of work.
You might just need:
One lighter lesson
One structured retrieval task
One moment where expectations are simplified
Small shifts can change the tone.
Lower the unnecessary pressure
Not every lesson needs to be outstanding.
It needs to be clear.
It needs to be purposeful.
That is enough.
Notice the quiet progress
The student who answered today.
The class that settled faster.
The essay that improved slightly.
The middle of term is where steady growth happens.
It just doesn’t look dramatic.
For Students Too
If you’re revising and feeling flat, this applies to you as well.
Motivation is unreliable.
Discipline is quieter.
Five focused minutes still count.
One improved paragraph still counts.
You do not need a breakthrough.
You need consistency.
The middle of the term is not failure.
It is the work.
And the work — when done steadily — is what builds results.
At Humsmums, we believe in sustainable teaching, structured revision, and realistic expectations.
You don’t need fireworks every week.
You need rhythm.
